Background of the Study

Patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) often experience mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress, which can negatively affect their treatment outcomes and quality of life. The presence of comorbid mental health conditions in cardiac patients complicates the management of cardiovascular health and requires a holistic approach to care. Nurses, who are directly involved in the daily care of cardiac patients, play a crucial role in addressing both the physical and psychological needs of these individuals.

In Benue State, the burden of both cardiovascular diseases and mental health disorders is rising, yet there is limited research on how nurses perceive and manage cardiac patients with comorbid mental health conditions. Nurses’ attitudes towards these patients can significantly affect their ability to provide effective care. This study will assess the attitudes of nurses towards managing cardiac patients with comorbid mental health disorders, exploring how these attitudes influence patient care and identifying areas for professional development.

Statement of the Problem

Patients with both cardiac and mental health conditions may not receive optimal care if nurses have negative attitudes or lack adequate training in managing such comorbidities. In Benue State, there may be insufficient awareness and resources to address the unique needs of this patient group. Negative or indifferent attitudes by nurses could lead to suboptimal care and contribute to worsened patient outcomes. This study seeks to evaluate nurses’ attitudes towards caring for cardiac patients with mental health comorbidities and the potential impact on patient care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the attitudes of nurses in Benue State towards cardiac patients with comorbid mental health disorders.
  2. To explore the factors that influence nurses' attitudes toward managing cardiac patients with mental health comorbidities.
  3. To identify training needs and strategies to improve nurses' attitudes and skills in caring for cardiac patients with mental health disorders.

Research Questions

  1. What are the attitudes of nurses in Benue State towards cardiac patients with comorbid mental health disorders?
  2. What factors influence nurses’ attitudes towards caring for cardiac patients with mental health comorbidities?
  3. How can training programs improve nurses’ attitudes and approaches to caring for cardiac patients with mental health disorders?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Benue State have negative or neutral attitudes towards managing cardiac patients with comorbid mental health disorders.
  2. Nurses' attitudes towards managing cardiac patients with comorbid mental health disorders are influenced by factors such as lack of training, personal biases, and healthcare resources.
  3. Training programs and awareness campaigns improve nurses’ attitudes towards managing cardiac patients with comorbid mental health disorders.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working with cardiac patients in healthcare facilities in Benue State. Limitations may include variability in the nurses' prior experience with mental health issues, as well as potential biases in self-reported data regarding their attitudes.

Definitions of Terms

  • Comorbid Mental Health Disorders: The co-occurrence of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
  • Attitude: A nurse’s feelings, beliefs, and perceptions towards caring for patients with both cardiac and mental health conditions.
  • Cardiac Patients: Individuals diagnosed with heart disease or other cardiovascular conditions who may require specialized care.
